pdate Kernel to the Latest Version: In this article, we will check out the steps involved in the process of updating Linux Kernel to the latest stable version on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS(Bionic Beaver), 19.10(Eoan Ermine), 19.04(Disco Dingo) and other Ubuntu-based Distros. It is always suggested to use the latest stable Linux Kernel as they are the most stable versions and hence it will have all the updated fixes and added features.

Before updating to the latest version, let us know what kernel is running on our Ubuntu using the following steps.

  • Open Terminal using CTRL + ALT + T.
  • Execute the following command on the terminal and it will show the Kernel version that is currently active on your system.
$uname -r

  • Nextly, go to the official¬†kernel.org. You can find the latest stable version there. It will vary with time. For now, the most stable version is 5.4.2.

  • Hence, we are not running on the latest kernel here. Let us update it to the latest version.

How to update to the Latest[Stable] Linux Kernel-Version:

Execute the following commands on the terminal to update the kernel to the latest version.

$sudo apt update
$sudo apt dist-upgrade

Enter your system password when prompted to authenticate the update process. The system will now update to its latest update and the process will take more time(as long as 30 mins) depending on your internet connection.
