IMPORTANT

Though it is possible to upgrade Ubuntu to the latest stable versions via terminal, It is always suggested that we should take a backup of our sensitive data(possibly all user data). Sometimes, the process may take a long time, or sometimes there can be chances for errors.
Open Terminal on Ubuntu 18.04 using the shortcut combination CTRL + ALT + T.
First, we will update and upgrade all the packages up to date using the following commands.

sudo apt update

Copy

sudo apt upgrade

Copy
Now, we will restart our system so that any changes made that require restart will be completed. You can either do it the GUI way of just use the following command on the terminal.

sudo reboot

Copy
Next, we will install the Ubuntu Update Tool, the Update Manager Core. Run the following command on the terminal.

sudo apt install update-manager-core

Copy
Finally, it is time to run the upgrade command.

sudo do-release-upgrade

Copy
Note: The upgrade process can take a few hours to complete. Hence, be patient and make sure that the system or server is not turned off during the process for any reason.
That is it. After the completion, you can restart your Ubuntu system or Server, and then you can find yourself on Ubuntu 20.04 code-named Focal Fossa.
Note: If you are getting the message “No new releases found” then you may have to run the command $ sudo do-release-upgrade -d. This command will do a forced upgrade and hence users are advised to make sure before proceeding with this command.
Welcome to Focal Fossa!!

Nonetheless, without the -d v20.04 is NOT found, with -d it IS found.

Does this have to do with the fact that 20.04.1 has not yet been released ? If so, it might be more widely stated in upgrade instructions. If so, it sounds like a poor use of the -d flag seeing as it’s an LTS release ?

Seems like if you read the command line documentation conscientiously you will come to the wrong conclusion in this case.

Could this just be a “quick and dirty” solution, to recall a decades old expression that fixes itself after 20.04.1 is released ?

Guessing that the more things change the more they stay the same, lol !
