PEG-Streamer for Ubuntu: In this article, we will explain how to install the Mjpg-streamer application on your Ubuntu system.

MJPG-Streamer is a UVC webcam streaming tool. The expansion of UVC is a USB based Streaming Tool. With the help of this application, you can directly stream your video or image online using the UVC webcam. This application supports streaming through the VLC player. This application has the feature of Tilt and Pan.

Install MJPG-Streamer on Ubuntu:

You can install the MJPG-Streamer application using the snap package installer. Snap package installer comes as default installer on the Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 19.10 version. If your Ubuntu misses the snap application and then use the below command to install the snap package installer.

Note: Snappy is pre-installed on Ubuntu 16.04 and Higher Versions and however, it can be installed using sudo apt install snapd
  • Open the Terminal
  • Copy the below command, paste it on the terminal and execute it
$sudo snap install mjpg-streamer

  • Wait for a few minutes, The installation process will be completed.

Alternatively,

You can install the MJPG-Streamer application without using any command. This application is available on the Ubuntu Store and you can install directly from the Ubuntu store. Use the below button to open the MJPG-Streamer application through the Ubuntu Store on your Ubuntu system.

Configuring MJPG-Streamer Application {Important Step}:

You need to follow the instructions attentively.

  • Go to the directory “/var/snap/mjpg-streamer/current/
  • Open the “Config” file in the text editor
  • Set the DAEMON option as “true“. After changing the value it will look like this DAEMON=”true”.
  • Now you need to restart your mjpg-streamer application using the command,
$sudo snap restart mjpg-streamer
  • Once you restart the application, don’t forget to connect your UCV to the mjpg-streamer application using the below command
$sudo snap connect mjpg-streamer:camera

The above command will connect your UCV to the streamer application on your Ubuntu system.

Launch MJPG-Streamer Application:

You can launch the MJPG-Streamer application on your Ubuntu system using the launching command.

$mjpg-streamer --help

Some Basic Example Commands to launch MJPG Streamer Application:

To open an UVC webcam “/dev/video1” and stream it via HTTP:

$mjpg-streamer -i "input_uvc.so -d /dev/video1" -o "output_http.so"

To open an UVC webcam and stream via HTTP port 8090:

$mjpg-streamer -i "input_uvc.so" -o "output_http.so -p 8090"

To get help for a certain input plugin:

$mjpg_streamer -i "input_uvc.so --help"

Remove/Uninstall MJPG-Streamer from Ubuntu:

It is very easy to remove or uninstall the M JPEG-Streamer application from your Ubuntu system. Use the below command,

$sudo snap remove mjpg-streamer
