Install Opera from Ubuntu Repository:

In order to install the opera browser by using the command line method, follow the below steps.

  • You need to download the Opera key ring from the Opera website using wget command
$wget -qO- https://deb.opera.com/archive.key | sudo apt-key add -

When you execute the above command, you will get an output as “ok” as we mentioned in the above image.

  • Now, you need to add the Opera repository to your Ubuntu pc from the official Opera website.
$sudo add-apt-repository "deb [arch=i386,amd64] https://deb.opera.com/opera-stable/ stable non-free"

The above command will add the Opera repository to your Ubuntu PC as we mentioned in the above image.

  • Now to install the Opera Stable browser and use the below command
$sudo apt install opera-stable

Execute the above command to install the Opera stable version and enter “Y” to execute the installation process. Kindly wait for a few minutes and the complete package will installed in less than a minutes.

If you see the above option, simply click the “Yes” option and execute the installation process.

Once the Installation process got completed, Enter “opera” in terminal to open the Opera Browser.

Installing Opera Browser using the Ubuntu Store:

If you are new to Linux and Ubuntu, This method is the easiest way to installing Opera browser in Ubuntu pc without touching the Ubuntu terminal. To do this, follow the below steps:

  • Open the Ubuntu Store.
  • In the search bar, Type “Opera” and hit the enter button
  • The list of Opera browser will appear on your screen

  • Once select the opera browser, Click the “Install” button to download and install the opera browser.

  • You will be asked to enter your System Password. Enter the password to continue the installation password. Then the installation process will be initiated and it will take less than a minute to complete.

  • Once the installation process is done. You can launch the Opera browser by clicking the “Launch” button.
  • You can uninstall the Opera browser if you don’t like it.
  • You need to click the “Remove” button to remove the opera browser completely from your PC.

Download & Install Opera from Opera Website:

  • Open Opera website
  • You need to hit the “Download Opera” button

  • Now, Opera.deb file will download in your pc
  • Double click the file
  • Complete the installation
  • Once the installation got completed
  • You can access the opera browser using the ” All Apps Menu”

Launching Opera Browser:

Launching the Opera browser is a very easy way. You simply follow the below steps:

  • Open All Apps
  • Search “Opera”
  • Click the Opera icon
  • Wait for a few seconds to launch ( 1st time )

Remove or Uninstall Opera Browser:

You need to use the below commands to remove or uninstall the Opera browser from your Ubuntu 18.04 PC.

$sudo apt-get remove opera-stable

  • The above command will remove the Opera package from your Ubuntu PC
  • Now you need to remove all the repository that we added earlier
$sudo apt-delete-repository "deb [arch=i386,amd64] https://deb.opera.com/opera-stable/ stable non-free
  • The above command will remove the Ubuntu repository that we added.

How to Make Opera as Default Browser on Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS/ 19.04:

  • Go to Settings.
  • On the Left Pane, Scroll down and locate the option “Details“. Click on that.

  • Now, choose with Default Applications. You will find all the default applications for Web, Music, Video, and More.
