How To Install Ruby on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS & 19.04, Linux Mint & other Ubuntu-based Distros

uby: Ruby is an interpreted object-oriented programming language. Ruby is widely used for web development. It also offers many scripting features to process plain text and serialized files, or manage system tasks. It is simple, straightforward, and extensible. Ruby was designed and developed in the mid-1990s by Yukihiro “Matz” Matsumoto in Japan. In this article, we will see how to install Ruby interpreter on Linux Ubuntu 18.04 Versions, Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo, and on other Ubuntu-based Distros.

Install Ruby Ubuntu 19.04/18.04.2 LTS- Using Terminal:

Note: Snappy is pre-installed on Ubuntu 16.04 and Higher Versions and however, it can be installed using sudo apt install snapd

Follow the below steps in order to install the Ruby Ubuntu via terminal. Launch the terminal using shortcut key CTRL+ALT+T and type the following command in the terminal.

$sudo snap install ruby --classic

The terminal will ask you for a password, provide your user account password to proceed with the installation process of Ruby Ubuntu.

Install Ruby Ubuntu using Ubuntu Software-GUI:

  1. Go to All Applications (Show Applications on Disco Dingo).
  2. Locate Ubuntu Software and open it.

  3. Click on the Search symbol of Ubuntu Software. A Search box will appear.

  4. Search for Ruby Ubuntu. Once you find the app, click on that.

  5. Choose Install and kindly wait for the installation to complete.

  6. Once done, you can Launch the Ruby Ubuntu Application.

Launching Ruby Ubuntu:

Using the below two methods the Ruby Ubuntu can be launched.

  • Launch via terminal
  • Launch via all apps menu

Launch the terminal using shortcut key CTRL+ALT+T and type the following command in the terminal.

Click on the all apps menu icon in your Ubuntu desktop. Type the keyword “Ruby” so that it will be displayed below. Go ahead and choose the Ruby icon so that it will be launched automatically.

Remove Ruby from Linux Ubuntu – Using Terminal

Follow the below steps in order to remove the Ruby Ubuntu via terminal. Launch the terminal using shortcut key CTRL+ALT+T and type the following command in the terminal.

$sudo snap remove ruby

The terminal will ask you for a password, provide your user account password to proceed with the removal of Ruby.

Open Ubuntu Software and search for Ruby in the search box. Click on the remove tab in order to remove the Ruby GUI.
