How to Install Snappy Package Manager on various Linux Distributions

nap for Linux Distros: Snappy package manager otherwise called as Snaps(Packages) is a package management system which can be used to install various applications, games, and utilities on Linux Distributions. It was developed by Canonical who is the producer of Ubuntu. In this article, we will go through the steps involved in the process of installing Snappy package manager on Various Linux distros such as Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch, CentOS, OpenSUSE, RHEL, and more.

Install Snap on Various Linux Distros:

Here, we have listed all the commands to be used to install Snappy Package Manager on various Linux Distros. Kindly go through the list and choose according to your Linux Distro.

Snappy Package Manager for Ubuntu, Debian, ElementaryOS, & other Ubuntu-based Distros:

IMPORTANT
After the installation of Snap Package manager, several Distros require a system Restart.

Snap can be installed on Linux Ubuntu 18.04 LTS(Bionic Beaver), Ubuntu 19.04(Disco Dingo), and other Ubuntu-based Distros such as Linux Mint, KDE Neon, Kubuntu, & Elementary OS and also on Debian.

$sudo apt update
$sudo apt install snapd

Install Snap on Linux Fedora:

$sudo dnf install snapd
$sudo ln -s /var/lib/snapd/snap /snap
  • The above command is used to enable classic snap support.

Get Snap on Arch Linux:

  • Firstly, let us install the prerequisties before installing snap on Arch.
$git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/snapd.git
cd snapd
makepkg -si
  • Enable the systemd communication socket.
$sudo systemctl enable --now snapd.socket
  • Finally, enable classic snap support by creating the following symbolic link.
$sudo ln -s /var/lib/snapd/snap /snap

Snap for CentOS and Red Hat Enterprise(RHEL):

  • Let us add the Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux(EPEL) repository from which Snap can be installed.
$sudo yum install epel-release
$sudo yum install snapd
  • Enable the systemd communication socket.
$sudo systemctl enable --now snapd.socket
$sudo ln -s /var/lib/snapd/snap /snap
  • Finally, enable classic snap support by creating the following symbolic link.

Install Snap Package Manager on Arch Linux:

  • Execute the following command on the terminal and add the Snappy repository.
$sudo zypper addrepo --refresh https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/system:/snappy/openSUSE_Leap_15.0 snappy
  • The repository is added and now, we will import its GPG key.
$sudo zypper --gpg-auto-import-keys refresh
  • The next step is to upgrade the package cache using the following command.
$sudo zypper dup --from snappy
$sudo zypper install snapd
  • Finally, enable and start the Snap package manager.
$sudo systemctl enable snapd
sudo systemctl start snapd
Note: Users of Tumbleweed has to run the following commands to enable and start snapd.apparmor services.
$sudo systemctl enable snapd.apparmor
sudo systemctl start snapd.apparmor

Install Snap on Manjaro Linux:

$sudo pacman -S snapd
  • Enable the systemd communication socket.
$sudo systemctl enable --now snapd.socket
  • Finally, enable classic snap support by creating the following symbolic link.
$sudo ln -s /var/lib/snapd/snap /snap
