irtualBox 6.0 on Ubuntu 18.04: VirtualBox is a software developed by Oracle Corporation. This VirtualBox is a free & open source software working in all OS platforms. VirtualBox may be installed on Windows, Linux, Mac & Solaris OS. This VirtualBox is mainly used to create the Guest Operating Systems in the conventional Operating System. In simple, Installing Windows Operating System inside the Windows Operating System. This is a cross-platoform application & it allows you manage different operating systems in one PC.

There are the basic steps that you need to do before installing VirtualBox 6.0 on your Ubuntu 18.04 or Ubuntu 19.04 PC. The below steps will work if your user has “sudo” privileges. You need to update your system using the following commands:

$sudo apt update
$sudo apt upgrade

The above command will update and upgrade your Ubuntu to the latest version. Now it’s the time to download the keys from the oracle to install the Virtualbox 6.0 version.

Setting Up Oracle Public Key APT repo:

You need to import or download the key to your ubuntu pc which signed the ubuntu packages by the following commands:

$wget -q -O- | sudo apt-key add -

After executing the above two commands, you will get an output as “OK“, which means you are all set and you can initiate the installation process of Virtualbox 6.0 on Ubuntu PC.

You need to create & add an entry to /etc/apt/sources.list at end of the file by using the following command.

$sudo add-apt-repository "deb bionic contrib"

Install VirtualBox on Ubuntu 18.04, 19.04:

After completing the above steps, You are ready to install the VirtualBox app in your pc. Just copy the below command and paste in your terminal.

$sudo apt install virtualbox-6.0

The above command will install the “6.0” version of VirtualBox. If you want to install later or earlier versions and we suggest you need to change the version number of the VirtualBox app and execute the above command.

Once you completed the installation steps, Launch the application by following the below steps.

Install VirtualBox for AMD Chipsets:

The above installation command will only for Intel-based chipsets. For AMD chipsets, you need to use the below command to install the Virtualbox on your Ubuntu PC.

$sudo apt install virtualbox-qt

The above command will install the VirtualBox application on the AMD chipset based systems.

Launching VirtualBox 6.0 on Ubuntu PC:

You can launch this VirtualBox app in the following ways:

  1. Open Terminal
  2. Copy the following command virtualbox“.
  3. Paste the command in the terminal and hit the enter button.

Launch by All Apps Method:

  • Open All Apps menu
  • Search as “VirtualBox
  • The Virtualbox app will appear on your screen
  • Click the icon to launch the application on your Ubuntu PC

How to Remove VirtualBox 6.0 App from Ubuntu:

It is quite complicated to remove the app from your Ubuntu PC. We suggest the below commands If the commands are not working and then create a question in our Forum to solve this issue.

$sudo apt-get remove virtualbox* --purge

Sometimes the above command will not work in different Ubuntu version and so we suggest you use the below command to remove the app completely from your PC.

$sudo apt-get purge virtualbox-*

We suggest you restart your pc and check for the VirtualBox app, It will completely be removed from your pc.

  1. Easy to follow instructions for a novice like me. I had problems when I installed it before and could not get it to run due to my hard drive being encrypted. No other articles I found explained it for a novice to get it done. Thanks so much!

  2. $ sudo apt install virtualbox-qt
    for AMD chipset correct command for install VirtualBox!!!!
    This is if the script swears that the i386 chipset from Intel does not support installation, and the installation was interrupted by the system!!!
